Color Engraving - NO Paint!! Works on ceramic tiles and glass. Different color ceramic glazes can be used. Sax Cranberry Red yields a light brownish red, Sax Old Navy yields a light blue, copper oxide yields a metallic copper, and cobalt oxide yields a rich, dark blue that is great for glass bottles - MUCH more pleasing to the eye than the black obtained with TiO2. The LP file attached is only for the Eternal Love tile, but the picture shows a cat with navy blue glaze and a cat cranberry red glaze (I like cats, and made a lot of cat boxes), and a bottle labeled with cobalt oxide. My wife had me label just about every glass bottle in the house. I haven't tried other glazes or oxides, yet. Glazes require very low power and a VERY thin coat, whereas the oxides require about 50% power and a thicker coat (usually two coats). Glazes result in a pastel color, whereas the oxides are bright and vivid. I have only tried one other oxide - chromium oxide - which results in a metallic silver-white. Some oxides and compounds, particularly those containing cadmium, are extremely toxic and should not be used.

How-to Tutorial

Step 1 Set-up fixture for engraving the tile

Clean the tile with alcohol. Use two of the L shaped brackets to hold the ceramic tile firmly in place, but arranged so that the tile can be removed and replaced in EXACTLY the same location.

Step 2 Engrave Stem

Open TRI COLOR ROSE in Design Space.  

Hide all but the stem, and pre-view.

Mark the outline of the preview with a felt tip pen.

Remove the tile, coat the area inside the outline with two coats of TiO2, applied with a soft brush and let dry.

Replace the tile in the fixture. Set the engraving parameters to 50% power, depth 88, and engrave the stem (black)

Remove the tile, and wash off the excess TiO2

Step 3 Rose Petals

Open TRI COLOR ROSE in Design Space.  

Place the tile in the fixture such that it is in EXACTLY the same location

Hide all but the rose petals, and pre-view.

Mark the outline of the preview with a felt tip pen.

Remove the tile, coat the area inside the outline with a coat of copper oxide, applied with a soft brush and let dry.

Replace the tile in the fixture. Set the engraving parameters to 39% power, depth 89, and engrave the petals (copper)

Remove the tile, and wash of the excess Copper Oxide

NOTE: If there are unacceptable brush mark in the engraved image, apply another THIN coat of copper oxide and repeat.

Step 4 Green Glaze and Blue text

Open TRI COLOR ROSE in Design Space.  

Place the tile in the fixture such that it is in EXACTLY the same location

Hide all but the leaves, and pre-view.

Mark the outline of the preview with a felt tip pen.

Hide all but the text, and pre-view

Mark the outline of the preview with a felt tip pen.

Remove the tile, coat the area inside the leaves outline with a VERY THIN coat of green glaze, applied with a soft brush and let dry.

Coat the area of the text outline with two coats of Cobalt oxide solution, letting dry between coats.

Hide all but the leaves, and engrave 89D, 6P

Hide all but the text, and engrave 90D, 39P

Remove the tile, and wash off the glaze and cobalt oxide with water.

FINISHED!!
