How-to Tutorial
Step 1 Cut the hearts and circles out of wood
- Cut and engrave all heart layers and spacer circles.
- Laser cut the solid heart, the open (outline) heart, and all circular spacers.
- The dotted circles on the solid heart are alignment guides showing where the spacer circles will eventually be glued.
2. Do not glue the circles yet.
- Leave all spacer circles loose until the gears are cut and test-fitted.
3. Cut the gears.
• Cut the gears from metal (aluminum was used for this example), though wood or other suitable metals may also be used.
• Ensure all gear teeth are clean and free of burrs so they rotate smoothly.
4. Test-fit and align the gears.
• Place the gears over the alignment circles so each gear properly meshes with the adjacent gear.
• Adjust positioning until the gears rotate freely and the motion transfers correctly from one gear to the next.
5. Glue the spacer circles.
• Once gear placement and rotation are confirmed, glue the spacer circles to the solid heart and then to the open heart layer.
• Do not allow glue to contact the gears. The gears must remain free-spinning.
6. Final check.
• After the glue has cured, spin the gears to confirm smooth, continuous motion.
